GoPro Hero 14: Wat wordt er verwacht

Anticipation is running high surrounding the launch of GoPro's new flagship model. For the company, the introduction of the GoPro Hero 14 is crucial. Increasing competition from brands like DJI and Insta360 has put GoPro under pressure. In response, the CEO has decided to forgo his salary until the end of 2025 and the company has had to lay off 15% of its workforce. Not only the Hero 14, but also the upcoming GoPro Max 2 will play a key role in GoPro's recovery and market position. But will GoPro succeed in raising the bar above the competition with this new action cam?

Expected release date and price of the GoPro Hero 14

GoPro releases a new GoPro Hero model approximately once a year, usually around September or October. They aim to capitalize on the peak sales period of Black Friday and Christmas. The price is speculated to be around €400.

GoPro compared to Insta360 and DJI

The three major action cam brands currently have the following models as flagship cameras: the GoPro HERO 13, the Insta360 Ace Pro 2, and the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro.

When comparing the specs of these cameras, the GoPro Hero 13 comes out on top. Both the Osmo Action 5 Pro and the Ace Pro 2 can film at a higher resolution and more frames per second. Furthermore, both cameras have a longer battery life, better waterproofing, and more expandable storage. The price of the action cams is roughly the same, so based purely on specs, GoPro doesn't quite make the cut. With the GoPro Hero 14, GoPro has a lot of catching up to do. However, GoPro does have several features that DJI and Insta360 don't yet offer, such as hindsight and scheduled recording.

GoPro Hero 14 rumors

Little is currently known about the GoPro Hero 14. GoPro will, of course, try to develop a better action camera. One thing is certain, however, is that the GoPro Hero 14 will feature a new chip. This chip will be able to process images more effectively and provide an overall improvement in performance.

Resolution and fps

The GoPro Hero 14 is rumored to be capable of recording 5.3K video at 240 frames per second. If true, this would be a huge improvement over the current 5.3K at 60 fps. It's also significantly better than the competition: currently, the Osmo Action 5 Pro can record 4K video at 120 fps, and the Ace Pro 2 can also record 4K at 120 fps.

Larger lens

Furthermore, it's likely that the GoPro Hero 14 will feature a larger lens. GoPro needs to do this to keep up with the competition. Action cams from other brands already have larger lenses for better low-light recording.

Battery life

GoPro will also have to catch up significantly in terms of battery life. The DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro can record for 240 minutes and the Insta360 Ace Pro 2 for 180 minutes, while the GoPro Hero 13 only manages 150 minutes. GoPro will therefore have to develop a larger battery or make the camera much more energy-efficient.

Hypersmooth 7.0

Every year, GoPro releases a new version of its stabilization software. This is how GoPro truly differentiates itself. This year, GoPro will release a new version again, and expectations are once again high.

AI

With every smartphone, action cam, or camera released this year, more and more AI features are being added. There's also speculation that the GoPro Hero 14 will be equipped with various AI features. These will primarily focus on content-focused AI features, such as automatic editing or automatically generated highlights from your footage.

Conclusion

GoPro is currently lagging behind the competition. Therefore, GoPro has a lot of catching up to do on many fronts. If the rumors are true, they'll be making great strides with the new GoPro Hero 14. Of course, the competition won't be sitting idle either, coming up with their own innovations. It will be very interesting to see who ultimately comes up with the best action cam of 2025. Besides the Hero 14, the GoPro Max 2 will also be released this year, with which they hope to steal some of Insta360's market share.
