Wat is het verschil tussen MagSafe, Qi en Qi2?

If you're looking for the difference between MagSafe, Qi and Qi2, you'll quickly come across all sorts of terms: wireless charging, magnetic charging, MagSafe-compatible, Qi2-certified, and different wattages. It sounds technical, but the difference is especially important if you want to choose a wireless charger, MagSafe power bank or Qi2 power bank that suits your phone.

In this blog, we explain what MagSafe, Qi and Qi2 mean, when to use which technology, and what to look out for when choosing a wireless power bank.

What is Qi?

Qi is the universal standard for wireless charging. Many smartphones, earbuds, and wireless chargers support Qi. You place your phone on a charging surface or stand, and the phone charges wirelessly via induction.

The drawback of classic Qi chargers is that your phone must be placed on the charger in a specific way. If your phone is slightly misaligned, charging may be slower or even stop. While this isn't a major issue with a desk charger, it's inconvenient with a power bank or car mount.

Qi is especially suitable if you want simple wireless charging and magnetic attachment is not important.

What is MagSafe?

MagSafe is Apple's magnetic system for iPhone. From the iPhone 12 series onwards, all iPhones have a magnetic ring on the back. This ensures that a MagSafe charger, MagSafe power bank, or MagSafe holder automatically snaps into place correctly.

This makes MagSafe handy for on the go. A magnetic power bank stays on your iPhone better than a regular wireless power bank. MagSafe is also practical for accessories such as car holders, phone stands, and grips.

Please note: "MagSafe-compatible" usually means that an accessory works magnetically with an iPhone, but this is not always the same as officially Apple MagSafe-certified.

What is Qi2?

Qi2 is the newer standard for wireless charging. The biggest difference from classic Qi is the magnetic alignment. This makes your phone snap to the charger better, and the charging coil automatically aligns more precisely.

In practice, Qi2 therefore resembles MagSafe, but Qi2 is intended for broader use than just Apple. It is a universal standard for wireless charging with magnetic alignment.

This is particularly interesting for power banks. A Qi2 power bank combines wireless charging with magnetic attachment. This ensures your phone stays in place better while charging.

MagSafe, Qi, and Qi2 in one overview

Technology What is it? Magnetic? Best for
Qi General standard for wireless charging Usually not Simple wireless charging on a desk or nightstand
MagSafe Apple’s magnetic system for iPhone Yes iPhone, MagSafe power banks and magnetic accessories
Qi2 Newer universal standard with magnetic alignment Yes Magnetic wireless charging with broader compatibility
  • Choose Qi for simple wireless charging

A regular Qi charger is fine if your phone is resting quietly in one spot. Think of a charger for your desk or nightstand. For on the go, Qi is less ideal because your phone doesn't magnetically snap into place.

  • Choose MagSafe if you use an iPhone

Do you have an iPhone with MagSafe? Then MagSafe accessories are very practical. Think of a magnetic power bank, car holder or 3-in-1 wireless charger.

For iPhone users, MagSafe is particularly useful because your phone automatically clicks into place correctly. This prevents problems with incorrect placement.

  • Choose Qi2 if you're looking for a new wireless power bank

Are you buying a new wireless power bank now? Then Qi2 is often the most future-proof choice. You get the benefits of magnetic alignment, while Qi2 as a standard is more widely applicable than just Apple MagSafe.

This is especially useful with a power bank: your phone stays in place better, the charging coil is better aligned, and there's less chance of your phone unknowingly not charging properly.

The MOJOGEAR NovaMag All-in-1 is an example of an excellent Qi2 power bank.

What about charging speed?

With wireless charging, you often see wattages like 7.5W, 15W, or 25W. These are maximum values. The actual speed depends on your phone, charger, power bank, adapter, and temperature.

Wired charging via USB-C usually remains faster and more efficient than wireless charging. Wireless charging is mainly about convenience. You simply attach your phone to the power bank or charger and don't have to connect a cable.

Are you primarily looking for speed? Then also consider the USB-C power output of the power bank. Are you looking for convenience on the go? Then a MagSafe or Qi2 power bank is more logical.

What should you look for in a MagSafe or Qi2 power bank?

When choosing a wireless power bank, pay particular attention to:

  • Capacity: 10,000 mAh is compact and suitable for daily use. 20,000 mAh is more logical for holidays, longer days, or multiple devices.
  • Wireless power: check how many watts the power bank can deliver wirelessly.
  • USB-C power: important if you also want to charge quickly via cable.
  • Magnetic attachment: especially important if you use your phone while charging.
  • Built-in cables: convenient if you don't want to carry separate cables.
  • Case: preferably use a MagSafe- or Qi2-compatible case.

For example, the MOJOGEAR NovaMag All-in-1 Power Bank 10,000 mAh combines Qi2, magnetic wireless charging, and built-in cables. This makes it particularly useful for daily use, travel, and on-the-go charging without separate cables.

Conclusion

Qi is the foundation for wireless charging. MagSafe is Apple's magnetic system for iPhones. Qi2 is the newer standard that adds magnetic alignment to wireless charging.

Do you use an iPhone with MagSafe? Then both MagSafe and Qi2 accessories are interesting. If you're buying a new wireless power bank now, Qi2 is often the smartest choice. You benefit from magnetic attachment and a more modern standard for wireless charging.

Do you primarily want fast charging? Then use USB-C. Do you primarily want convenience on the go? Then choose a magnetic power bank with MagSafe or Qi2.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Qi2 the same as MagSafe?

No. Qi2 and MagSafe are similar because they both use magnetic alignment. MagSafe is Apple's proprietary system. Qi2 is a broader standard for wireless charging.

Does Qi2 work with iPhone?

Yes, many iPhones with MagSafe can also work with Qi2 accessories. The maximum charging speed depends on your iPhone model, the charger or power bank, and the adapter used.

Does MagSafe work with Android?

Sometimes, but not always completely. An Android phone can work magnetically with a suitable case or magnetic ring, but that doesn't automatically mean you'll get full Qi2 or MagSafe functionality.

Is wireless charging bad for your battery?

Not necessarily. Modern phones manage the charging process themselves. However, wireless charging can generate more heat than wired charging. Good alignment, such as with MagSafe and Qi2, helps to charge more efficiently.

Do I need a special case?

For the best magnetic attachment, use a MagSafe or Qi2-compatible case. A thick or non-magnetic case may cause the power bank to attach less securely or charge less effectively.

What is better for a power bank: Qi, MagSafe, or Qi2?

For a power bank, MagSafe or Qi2 is usually more practical than regular Qi. Your phone snaps on magnetically and stays in place better while charging.

Does USB-C charge faster than wireless charging?

Usually, yes. USB-C charging is often faster and more efficient. Wireless charging is mainly convenient because you don't have to connect a cable.
