GoPro recently released the GoPro Max 2. This is the successor to the action cam from 2019. It took a very long time before they released the successor. But now the question is: how good is the GoPro Max 2 compared to the competition? In this blog we will compare the different specifications and features. The prices of these two action cams are quite close to each other. The GoPro Max 2 is currently available for 519 euros, while the Insta360 X5 currently costs 535 euros.

 Therefore, in principle, the specifications of the two should be able to compete with each other, but is that actually the case?

Both cameras can film in 8K resolution at 30fps, so at the maximum resolution the two cameras are evenly matched. However, the Insta360 X5 can film at 120fps in 4K, while the GoPro Max 2 can only film up to 100fps. In addition, the GoPro Max can only film up to 60fps in single lens mode at all resolutions, while the Insta360 X5 can film at 120fps at 1080p.

The maximum battery life of the GoPro Max 2 isn't yet known, but we do know that the battery has 22.5% more capacity than the GoPro Max. This means we can expect the GoPro Max 2 to last approximately 100 minutes at 5.6K resolution and 30fps with similar power consumption.
The Insta360 has a battery capacity of 2400 mAh and has a battery life of 135 minutes on similar settings.

If you want to go diving, you can go exactly 10 meters deeper in the water with the Insta360 X5 than with the GoPro Max 2.

In some aspects the GoPro Max 2 manages to keep up, but in many areas the Insta360 X5 is simply much better.

Various features of the GoPro Max 2 and the Insta360 X5

In terms of specs, the Insta360 X5 is significantly better than the GoPro Max 2. However, there are a few features that the GoPro Max 2 has that the Insta360 X5 doesn’t and vice versa.

Interchangeable lenses

Both the Insta360 X5 and the GoPro Max 2 have interchangeable lenses. This is an extremely useful feature. If you don't use lens guards, scratches can occur on your lenses, which you can see on the footage. With the GoPro Max and Insta360 X4, you were simply out of luck when this happened. Now you can easily replace the lenses yourself. This means you don't have to immediately buy a whole new action cam when your lens gets damaged. Magnetic mounting

The GoPro Max 2 and the Insta360 X5 both have the option to magnetically mount the action cams. This allows you to easily switch between different accessories. This saves a lot of time when you want to switch from different perspectives. Do you want to be able to quickly switch between accessories, but you don't have the latest Insta360 or GoPro Max? PureVideo

Both action cams feature a 1/1.3" sensor, allowing them to capture more light in the dark, allowing you to film effectively even at night. Insta360 also offers an additional software feature called PureVideo. This software automatically enhances underexposed footage, making videos in the dark look even better.

Microphones

One of the few things the GoPro Max 2 actually excels at is the number of microphones. The GoPro Max 2 has 6 microphones, while the Insta360 X5 only has 2. This makes the GoPro Max 2 better at capturing directional and ambient sounds. However, the Insta360 X5 is better at capturing voices. This is thanks to the Voice Enhancement software.

Conclusion

The Insta360 X5 performs significantly better than the GoPro Max 2 in almost all areas. The reason to buy the GoPro Max 2 over the Insta360 X5 is because you're a big GoPro fan, used to GoPro, and already own multiple GoPro devices. The price difference isn't enough to explain the difference in specs and features.
