A power bank is essential when traveling. With a power bank, you can charge your devices anywhere, so you can go out and about without a worry. But what if you're flying on holiday? Can you take a power bank on a plane? Can you take any power bank? And how many power banks are allowed? Read here what you need to pay attention to when taking a power bank on a plane.

Quick navigation

Which power bank is allowed on the plane?

According to the rules of the IATA, the International Air Transport Association, you are allowed to take a power bank of up to 100W (27,000 mAh) with you in your hand luggage. If you want to take a power bank above 100W with you, you must request permission from the airline you are traveling with. Batteries larger than 160 Wh are never allowed.

Many manufacturers therefore develop power banks with a capacity that is permitted. The MOJOGEAR ULTRA laptop power bank , for example, has a capacity of 26,800 mAh (100W) and can therefore be taken on an airplane.

Can I put a power bank in my checked baggage?

Power banks are prohibited in the hold. This is because the battery of a power bank contains the flammable material lithium, which is risky in the hold. So always take your power banks with you in your hand luggage.

Tip: Make sure you have (the information on) the power bank at hand at the airport. This way you prevent the power bank from not being allowed on board at the security check.

How many power banks can I take on the plane?

Sometimes, it can be very convenient to take multiple power banks with you when traveling for a holiday. For example, a small one and a large one. But are you allowed to take multiple power banks on an airplane?

You may take a maximum of two power banks on an airplane. Please note that these power banks together must not exceed 27,000 mAh. For example, you are allowed to take two 10,000 mAh power banks on the plane, but not two 20,000 mAh power banks.

All MOJOGEAR power banks are suitable for taking on an airplane. Don't know how many mAh your power bank has? This is often indicated somewhere on the power bank itself. If it's not there, check the manual or the website of the store/webshop where you bought the power bank; it will definitely be indicated there.

How do I know whether my power bank meets the requirements to be allowed on the plane?

Each power bank has a certain capacity. This is expressed in milliampere hours (mAh) or watt hours (Wh). The capacity of your power bank is probably expressed in mAh. Because the official, international unit for this is expressed in watt hours (Wh), both units are often mentioned.

The more mAh, the more power the power bank can provide to your device. You can often see the number of mAh on the back of the power bank. You can also find this in the instructions for use. So check the mAh amount of your power bank(s) carefully before departure.

Power bank to China? Pay attention to the CCC mark

Are you flying within China with a power bank? Then additional rules apply. Since June 28, 2025, passengers on domestic flights in China are not allowed to carry power banks without a clearly visible CCC mark. CCC stands for China Compulsory Certification and is also known as the 3C mark.

Power banks without a CCC mark, with an unclear mark, or from recalled product series may be confiscated at security control. This also applies even if the power bank otherwise meets the normal limit of 100 Wh.

Are you traveling to or via China? Then check in advance whether your power bank has a visible CCC or 3C logo. If your power bank does not have this mark, it is advisable not to take it on domestic flights in China or to check the rules of the airport and airline in advance. Unfortunately, MOJOGEAR power banks do not have a CCC mark.

Maximum Watt Hours Power Bank on an Airplane

If you search online for which power bank is allowed on a plane, you will often encounter a maximum watt-hour (Wh) value. But how do you know how many Wh your power bank has? There's a simple calculation for that:

Take the milliamp-hour (mAh) of your power bank, multiply it by 3.7 (the nominal voltage of a lithium-ion cell), and divide the result by 1000

A 20,000 mAh power bank then has:

(20,000×3.7) / 1,000 = 74 Wh

So this power bank has a capacity of 74 Wh, which is within the permitted limits for air travel.

Make sure the power bank is charged

During a security check, you may have to turn on your electronic equipment to show that the power bank is working. Therefore, make sure that the power bank is charged. In addition, it is of course also nice to be able to use the power bank on the plane. A compact travel charger with multiple ports is very handy to charge your power bank, smartphone and another device such as earphones or e-reader at the same time.
