Need a new iPhone charger?

Just got a new iPhone, or has your old charger stopped working? Then you'll almost certainly need a new iPhone charger. After all, a phone is not much use without a way to charge it. Since Apple no longer includes a power adapter in the box with new iPhones, you'll have to buy one separately. iPhone chargers come in many different shapes and sizes, and it's important to choose the right one. You can find many cheap iPhone chargers online, for instance. While they might work, they often can't fast charge your iPhone because they lack sufficient power output. This results in your iPhone charging very slowly, which is something nobody wants.

USB-C or Lightning for Apple

Recent EU regulations now require all new electronic devices to feature a USB-C port. This also applies to the latest iPhones, so from the iPhone 15 onwards, all models will have a USB-C connection and can be charged with a USB-C charger. This is a big step forward for users, as it means you can charge nearly all your devices with a single cable. You'll no longer need a drawer full of tangled cables to power up all your gadgets. In theory, one cable is all you need. However, if you want to charge multiple devices at the same time, you'll need more than one cable. That's where iPhone chargers with multiple ports come in handy, allowing you to charge multiple iPhones, or an iPhone and an iPad, simultaneously.

How does an iPhone charger work?

To charge your iPhone from a wall socket, you need two things: a power adapter and a cable. The power adapter (or plug) converts the mains electricity into power your phone can use. This adapter has a connection port, which on modern iPhone chargers is almost always a USB-C port. This is because USB-C can deliver power at much faster speeds. It's also possible to charge your iPhone without a wall plug. You can, for example, use a power bank, for which you only need a cable. However, most power banks can't match the charging speeds of a dedicated iPhone charger. You can also charge your iPhone using other devices. If you have an iPad, for instance, you can often use its battery to give your phone a boost.

What should I look for when buying an iPhone/Apple charger?

When you want to buy a new iPhone charger, there are a few important things to consider. The most crucial factor is the amount of power (in watts) the charger can provide. Some chargers only offer 15 watts of power, which would charge an iPhone 15 Pro Max very slowly, and that's not ideal. If you want a charger that will always provide enough power for your iPhone, you should generally look for one that offers 30W or more. This is quite different for Android phones, some of which can charge at over 100W.

Besides the power output, the number of ports is also important to take into account. For example, if you only have one wall socket available but need to charge multiple devices at once, having a charger with several ports is extremely useful.

Finally, you need to check both the connection on your phone and the port on the charger. Some chargers, for instance, only have USB-C ports. If you have an older USB-A to Lightning cable for your phone, it won't fit into the charger, and you'll need to buy a new cable. Luckily, most new cables and chargers now use the USB-C standard. iPhone Fast Charger

Do you want to use your charger to get your iPhone powered up quickly? Then you need an iPhone fast charger. Different iPhones require different wattages to enable fast charging. For example, the iPhone 15 Pro Max can fast charge at 27W, while the iPhone 12 is limited to 20W. Many standard chargers offer around 20W, which means they are not fast chargers for the iPhone 15 Pro Max. If you want a fast charger for your iPhone 15 Pro Max, you will need a charger that can deliver 27W or more. The MOJOGEAR Charge+ can deliver 65W, which means you can even fast charge two iPhone 15 Pro Max phones at the same time.

Do I need an official Apple charger to fast charge?

As long as the charger can provide the correct wattage, you don't need an official one from Apple. This means you can also buy chargers that are not made by Apple. Apple charges a high price for its official chargers, so choosing a charger from another brand can save you a lot of money.

When is a charger an iPhone fast charger?

An iPhone charger is considered a fast charger when it can provide enough wattage for the phone to charge at its maximum possible speed. This varies per iPhone, as newer models require higher wattages than older ones. For example, an iPhone 14 Pro Max can charge at 27W, but an iPhone 14 can only charge at 20W. Please note: From the iPhone 15, Apple has also adopted the USB-C port on all iPhones, so your old Lightning cables will no longer work with these models.
