Wat is Qi2 en hoe werkt het?

Wireless charging is becoming increasingly popular, almost every phone supports it and you see cables disappearing more and more around you. With Qi2, wireless charging becomes even better and faster. You may have already come across some charging products online that state that they support Qi2 charging. But what exactly is it and what do you get from it? Qi2 chargers or power banks are often more expensive, but this has a good reason. In this blog we explain what you can do with Qi2, why it is better than Qi1, what the difference is with MagSafe and which phones can use Qi2 charging.

What is Qi2?

Qi is a quality standard for wireless charging. This quality standard is guaranteed by the Wireless Power Consortium. The WPC is an international association of brands that develop the Qi wireless charging standard. This includes more than 300 different brands. This consortium also includes several big names such as Samsung and Apple. All their chargers are therefore also Qi certified. Qi2 is the successor to Qi1. Qi2 can deliver 15W charging power and is equipped with magnets so that your device always lies properly on the charger.

What is the difference between Qi1 and Qi2?

There are two major differences between the two charging standards. Qi2 is equipped with magnets, so that your device always lies properly on the charger. Qi1 does not have this. In addition, Qi1 delivers 7.5 Watts of power for iPhones, compared to 15W with Qi2. With Qi1 you could already charge Android devices with 15W. That is why Qi2 has less added value for Android devices.

Because Qi2 is equipped with a magnet, your device charges more efficiently. The magnets ensure that the magnetic coils lie well on top of each other, so that as little power as possible is lost. Devices that are compatible with Q1 can also be charged with a Qi 2 charger, but cannot use the higher power.

What is the difference between Qi2 and MagSafe?

The main difference is that Qi2, the official standard of WPC, is an open standard and MagSafe is a proprietary technology of Apple.

MagSafe works best with Apple devices only and some MagSafe accessories do not work (fully) with Android. Qi2, on the other hand, works platform-independently and is intended for both Apple and Android devices (from 2024).

In addition, Apple has a MagSafe charger that can charge up to 25W. This charger can only do this with the iPhone 16. Qi2 can charge up to 15W.

Which phones support Qi2?

There are currently still phone models that support Qi2 besides the iPhones. This is because Qi2 for Android phones has limited added value.

The following smartphone models currently support Qi2:

  • iPhone 12/13/14/15/16
  • Samsung S25 series
  • OnePlus 13 series
  • HMD Skyline
  • Oppo Find X8 and Find X8 Pro

The Android phones in this list do not have a magnet in the phone itself. But with a magnetic case you can still use the magnet in the Qi2 charger or power bank .

There are currently many rumors about Qi2.2 This is a major upgrade from Qi2. With Qi 2.2 you can charge with 50 watts, which is almost 3 times as much. This also makes it worthwhile for Android smartphone brands to enable support.

Conclusion

Qi2 is a big upgrade for iPhones compared to Qi1. The power doubles from 7.5W to 15W. That's why it's definitely worth switching from Qi1 to Qi2 if you have an iPhone. Do you have an Android phone? Then there's a good chance that your phone doesn't support Qi2 at all. Do you have a Samsung S25 or OnePlus 13, then your phone does support Qi2, but you won't notice any difference in charging speed. You do benefit from the magnet, which means your smartphone stays better connected to a charging station or power bank.
