DJI Osmo Action 6: Specs en nieuwe features

Just over a year after the release of the Osmo Action 5, DJI is now releasing the Osmo Action 6. This makes them the first, and perhaps only, of the three major action cam brands to release a new flagship model this year. Both Insta360 and GoPro have only released mini versions and 360-degree action cams. In this blog post, we'll compare the Osmo Action 6 with the Osmo Action 5. We'll discuss the specifications and new features, so you can make the right decision about whether to buy the Osmo Action 6.

In terms of specifications, not much has changed between the Osmo Action 5 and 6. The resolution, battery life, waterproofing, and frames per second all remain the same. However, two major changes have been made: the sensor is now 1/1.1 inch. Furthermore, the Action 6 is the first action cam to feature a variable aperture.

New 1/1.1 inch sensor

The 1/1.1-inch sensor allows you to film in a near-1:1 ratio. This allows you to crop your video to various formats after filming without loss of quality. This allows you to create videos for YouTube (16:9) and TikTok (9:16) in a single shot. The sensor is also much larger, meaning the action cam will perform even better in low-light situations. The new sensor generally provides a cleaner and more detailed image.

Variable aperture f/2.0 - f/4.0

You can now adjust the variable aperture yourself or set it to automatic. The maximum aperture, from f/2.0 to f/4.0, now lets in even more light than the Osmo Action 5. It lets in approximately twice as much light as the Osmo Action 5. This allows you to film even better in the dark.

When the aperture is set to automatic, it will automatically close or open further. If you're filming in a brightly lit location, the aperture will automatically close further to prevent overexposed shots. Consider filming while skiing, for example. When skiing, there's a tremendous amount of light due to all the reflections off the snow. The aperture will also open further when filming in the dark. This ensures you get a detailed and clear image in all conditions.

New features of the Osmo Action 6

There aren't a ton of new features for the Osmo Action 6. This release focuses primarily on the action cam's hardware. However, there are still several new features that improve usability and image quality.

HorizonSteady

HorizonSteady can now also be used in 4K. This allows you to film in the highest quality while keeping your image completely horizontal. This can be very useful when performing a stunt with your Osmo Action on your helmet or handlebars, as it makes the footage much smoother and more pleasant to look at.

Gesture control

You can now control your Osmo Action with hand gestures. This is especially helpful when filming in the cold, for example. This means you don't have to constantly remove your gloves to start recording or make other adjustments. It also allows you to easily start recording or take a photo without a remote.

Conclusion

The Osmo Action 6 has several new features and specifications. The new sensor and aperture make a huge difference in darker environments, such as when filming indoors without additional lighting or when it's dark outside. In these situations, you'll notice much more detailed footage than with the Osmo Action 5.

However, you'll barely notice the difference in daylight. You might notice a minimal difference in color and contrast, but it's very limited.

In addition, it is extremely useful if you are a content creator that the sensor is almost completely square, so you can subsequently edit your image into different image formats for all platforms.

Since not much has changed besides the sensor and aperture, it's only worthwhile to upgrade if you actually plan to use your action cam frequently in low-light situations. Otherwise, the Osmo Action 5 is more than adequate!
