Are you having trouble remembering your lines during your video recordings? Or do you find it difficult to convey your message with enthusiasm if you have to remember a text? An autocue, or teleprompter, may be a good tool. However, working with a teleprompter also requires some skills. It is not as easy as it seems. With the following 5 tips you will ensure that you will master the teleprompter in no time.

 

What is a teleprompter?

An autocue is a display onto which text is projected. The text is displayed in front of a camera or smartphone via a kind of mirror, without the camera registering this. This allows you to read a video script in the mirror and look straight into the lens, without this being visible to the camera or viewer. Autocues are available for both smartphones and cameras .

#1 Prepare your text yourself

It is important to write the text in your own words. This way your message comes across more naturally and it is easier to read the text. While preparing and writing the text, it is wise to read the text aloud. This way you can reformulate sentences and filter out difficult words.

It is of course also possible that the text was prepared by a colleague. It is important to then rewrite the text in your own words.

#2 Write colloquialisms

Since you read the text (partly) and this should appear as natural as possible, it is important to write the text in colloquial language. Write the text as if you were having a conversation. It is better to skip words like nevertheless or however . Nobody says these words, right? Use everyday and informal words.

In addition, make short sentences, write everything in full (including numbers) and place the subject and verb together. Continue to speak your text out loud while writing, so that you can check and rewrite the text as you write.

3. Stel de tekst correct in

Voordat je aan je opnames begint, is het verstandig om de tekst zelf in te stellen via een app of computer. Zo kan je bijvoorbeeld zelf de lettergrootte en afspeelsnelheid instellen en zorg je ervoor dat de tekst naar jouw persoonlijke voorkeur wordt weergeven. Hierdoor is het gemakkelijker om de tekst af te lezen.

Met een app als Parrot Teleprompter App (Apple App Store / Google Play Store) en BestView (Apple App Store / Google Play Store) kun je de lettergrootte en afspeelsnelheid instellen. Met de app Teleprompter (App Store) wordt de tekst weergeven op de telefoon waarmee je filmt. Zo kan je jezelf via de selfie camera filmen en tegelijkertijd je tekst oplezen.

Het is handig om zelf de controle te hebben over de snelheid van de tekst. Zo kan je de tekst bijvoorbeeld wat vertragen als je je verspreekt. Hiervoor kan je een voetpedaal of een Bluetooth remote control voor gebruiken. Met een Bluetooth remote kan je niet alleen het tempo bepalen, maar hier kan je ook de tekst mee terug scrollen of de tekst mee pauzeren. Een remote control wordt vaak meegeleverd bij een autocue, zoals bij de Ulanzi RT02.

#4 Practice, practice, practice!

Before the video recordings start and the autocue starts running, it is wise to read the text out loud in advance. This way you know where to put the emphasis and you can determine the pace.

Before recording begins, it is wise to practice using the teleprompter. It can take some time to get used to working with an autocue. So run through your text using the teleprompter, so that it runs smoothly during the recording.

#5 Watch your attitude and tone

Remember that a teleprompter serves as a tool. If you simply read the text aloud or rattle off quickly, your viewers will probably quickly tune out. Speak with enthusiasm and passion and remember that on video, only half of your energy and enthusiasm remains. So don't be afraid to tell your story with full energy or to be over the top . However, be careful not to raise your voice.

In addition, a good posture is also important. Stand upright and relax your neck and shoulder muscles. This makes you look more accessible and professional and prevents you from looking cramped.
